There are nearly 2,000 years of history packed into Exeter, from the Roman city walls and medieval Cathedral to the Guildhall, historic Quayside and narrow streets around the city centre.

You can have a wedding surrounded by centuries of history, then wander down to the Quayside for a drink afterwards.

And there is a surprisingly varied choice of wedding venues.

Historic Exeter

Exeter Castle

If history is your thing, Exeter Castle is hard to beat. Also known as Rougemont Castle, it sits within the old city walls and dates back almost 1,000 years. Its courtyard, historic rooms and city-centre location make it a particularly distinctive place for a wedding.

St Nicholas Priory

St Nicholas Priory offers something smaller and more intimate. The building dates back to the 11th century and includes a beautiful medieval Great Hall, stone walls, timber beams and a sheltered garden. It’s right in the heart of Exeter but feels a world away from the busy streets outside.

City weddings with a difference

If grand historic buildings aren’t quite your thing, Exeter has plenty of alternatives.

Cosy Club

The Cosy Club occupies part of the former Dean Clarke Hospital on Southernhay Gardens, with high ceilings, architectural details and wonderfully eclectic interiors. It’s a very different atmosphere from a country house – and perfect if you want something relaxed and distinctly urban.

And these are just some of the possibilities. Exeter also has hotels, restaurants, private spaces and venues on the outskirts of the city, giving you plenty of scope to find somewhere that suits the sort of wedding you actually want.

Exeter and beyond

One of the great things about getting married in Exeter is its location. Guests can stay in the city, shop at the Princesshay centre, and easily get out into the Devon countryside or down to the coast.

I’m based in Exeter myself, so the city and surrounding area are very much home territory for me. I’ve conducted ceremonies at many Exeter venues, and I love the fact that you can have such completely different weddings without ever travelling very far.

And once you’ve chosen the place, I’ll help you create a ceremony that fits it – and, more importantly, fits you.
