Wooded headland and sea views across Torbay

The three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham each have their own character, and between them you’ve got beaches, harbours, Victorian architecture, historic houses, gardens and plenty of places to eat, drink and stay. It’s also a lovely part of Devon for turning a wedding into a weekend getaway rather than simply arriving for the ceremony and heading home afterwards.

Torquay

Torquay is the most cosmopolitan of the three, with its palm-lined seafront, marina, hotels and restaurants. There are some particularly grand settings here, including Torre Abbey, a historic house with beautiful gardens, and Cockington Court, set within the picturesque Cockington estate just outside the town.

If you like the idea of a wedding with a sea view, Torquay has plenty of opportunities for that too – whether the water is the backdrop to your ceremony or simply somewhere to head for photographs afterwards.

Paignton

Paignton has a more traditional seaside feel, with its long sandy beach, pier and promenade. I can often be found here in the summer holidays, taking my son to the Splashdown waterpark!

Just outside Paignton, near Marldon, is Torbay Party Barn – a rustic barn on a working farm that gives you a completely blank canvas. You get the barn, a bar and plenty of space, then bring in whatever you need to make the day your own. It’s ideal if you want a relaxed, private wedding, and younger guests tend to love the farm animals!

Brixham

Then there’s Brixham, with its colourful harbour, fishing boats and distinctly maritime character.

It feels quite different from Torquay and Paignton, and that makes it particularly appealing if you want your wedding to have a strong sense of place. You can combine the harbour and coastline with nearby countryside, or choose one of the area’s historic or country-house venues.

A wedding by the sea

I’m based in Exeter and cover Torbay and the surrounding area. So whether you’ve fallen for Torquay, Paignton, Brixham or somewhere in between, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
